Racing has been a part of Matt’s life ever since he was a child, his father, Doug, raced dirt late models for many years and then eventually moved into sprint cars. Matt would always be in the shop helping his Dad work on the car and getting it ready for the upcoming event. Matt’s interest in racing began from always being around his father in the shop and at the racetrack. Doug’s last three years as a driver he raced a sprint car. That is where Matt really decided that racing was what he wanted to do. When Matt was 14, not quite old enough to race a sprint car due to the present rules, he was allowed to hotlap his Dad’s car. Loving that, he knew that he would be in the seat as soon as he turned 16. Matt started racing sprinters as soon as he became of the legal age, his father dropped down from driving, and Matt took over. Doug still raced a few times while Matt was also following a football and wrestling career in high school and would not be able to make it to the track. Rock Rapids, Iowa, was the first event for Matt his rookie year of 1989, and was able to earn the “Youngest Ever Rookie of the Year” Award at the end of the season. The summer of ’91, Matt and the team started racing at Huset’s Speedway every Sunday night and then at the end of every night, Matt would drive back to the Minneapolis area, about a four hour drive, to pursue his college education. Matt finished his education at Northwestern Chiropractic School to earn his Doctorate Degree. Also in that time period, Matt took a little time off to go into basic training for the National Guard down in Georgia. After his schooling and still racing sprint cars every weekend, Matt and his wife, Kerri, started their first Chiropractic Clinic in Jackson, MN. That has grown from one to three over the past years, all located in the southwestern part of Minnesota.

Matt and the team never really raced for points, their idea was to just race as many different race tracks as they could and as far as the pocket book would allow. World of Outlaws, the IRA, NOSA, and the NCRA are just a few of the sanctioning bodies the Wasmund Team raced or currently races with. In 2002 and 2003, Matt and the team raced 75% of the IRA shows all over Wisconsin, Minnesota and even parts of Michigan. 2002 was the year Matt always talks about because he remembers the race in June of that year when he won an IRA event in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Some of his favorite race tracks would include Butler, Michigan, Dodge County in Wisconsin and also Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.

Being in the sport as a driver for almost 20 years, one would certainly have a lot memorable moments, but winning that race in 2002 with the IRA, earning the “Youngest Rookie of the Year” Award, and meeting all the people associated with the sport of auto racing are the highlights of Matt’s career. This year’s plans are to run with the IRA, NOSA and also some Knoxville Raceway shows including the Knoxville Nationals this August. So keep up with Matt’s new website as for you will see weekly updates and pictures and be sure to sign the guestbook and give Matt a shout out.
